Interview with Lillie Dial [electronic resource] 2004 April 19 / interviewer: Hope Murphy ; transcriber: Jessica Colopy.

Lillie Beatty Dial's father was a farmer in southern Mecklenburg County, N.C. She remembers helping with chores as best she could for a young child. They were a self-sufficient and supportive family who taught her values. Ms Dial describes her experiences as an elementary school child at the Rosenwald School, Pineville Colored Elementary School. She discusses her favorite teachers, friends, and school life. She also recalls cold walks to school since African Americans students did not have buses until high school. She recalls most African American students ending their education at 7th grade since, for a time, there was no high school for African Americans. She reviews other alternatives that some students had. Ms Dial tells about her years at Pineville Colored High School and the encouragement family and friends gave her to attend college. Ms Dial then skips ahead to after her graduation from Barber Scotia College and describes her elementary school teaching experiences. Her classes were mostly filled with white children. Ms Dial continued teaching until her sister became ill and moved in with her and her husband Walter.
